Common misconceptions

The phrase "Camcorder" comes from the time when the camera and the (video-) recorder part of cameras was separate. When the first cameras with included recorder arrived, they soon were called Cam(era and videore)corder.

Some common misconceptions:

Wrong
Why
Right
"I have a DVcam"

DVcam is a video format (arguably an ill-chosen name by Sony)

"I have a miniDV camcorder"

"I am looking for a DVD camcorder"

DVD is the new video disc standard. As of yet there are no camcorders available for this format.

To burn you own DVDs, I strongly recommend one of Apple's new computers. No other machine makes it so easy to interact with all you digital media.

"I am looking for a digital camcorder"

"MiniDV is as good as film"
Film and digital video employ two fundamentally different technologies for capturing motion. None of them is perfect, and each has a certain "feel" to it. The resolution of miniDV (and even HiDef) is inferior to that of film.

"miniDV has different uses than film"

"Digital video does not need lighting"
While some video cameras have highly sophisticated video chips that allow you to film in low light levels
"If you want video to look good, you need lights"
"Dogma95 is filmed on video"

The Dogma95 movement makes it very clear that a true Dogma film has to be shot on film format (35mm academy format).

That said, not even the most prominent member of Dogma seems to stick to these rules.

"Dogma = film"
